Circulation

Starting July 1, 2025, any items checked out AFTER July 1 will renew automatically from the original due date.

Items that are eligible for renewal will automatically renew for 3 weeks from the original due date. This will happen 3 days before the original due date, when the first courtesy notice is sent.

IMPORTANT: This will NOT be a retroactive change! It only affects items checked out after July 1, 2025. Anything checked out before July 1st will have to be renewed manually.

A courtesy notice will let you know items are due 3 days before the due date, as well as what the new due date will be.

Any new due dates will be reflected in the account's "Checked Out Items".  The courtesy notice will also let you know when items have not been renewed.

Items may not have been autorenewed for a couple of different reasons:

  1. The item was renewed twice already (which is the limit of renewals per item). For additional time, feel free to bring the item to any branch location. If the item does not have holds, it may be checked in and out again for more time.
  2. The item is on hold for another patron. If this is the case, please return the material as soon as possible.

JMRL has a single catalog with two different interfaces to access and experience the entire collection.

Classic is the base interface provided by the catalog vendor.  It is a simplified experience for users who do not wish to see a lot of additional content.

Find It is a modernized interface built in an open-source application.  It is an updated experience similar to more current catalog websites with large book covers, carousels, and full integration in JMRL's website

Read more and see FAQs about the catalog on the page Findit.

Please bring a photo ID that includes your name and current address.  If you do not live in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Louisa, Greene, or Nelson there is an annual out-of-area fee of $30.  To get a In-House use card, you must have a photo ID.

If your photo ID does not have your current address one of the following may be used (these pieces of mail on a mobile device are eligible as well)*:

  •     Utility bill
  •     Checks or bank statement
  •     Lease
  •     Tax assessment
  •     Recently postmarked letter
  •     Voter's registration
  •     DMV change of address
  •     Package slips
  •     Prison discharge documentation

*Patrons using the Haven or the Salvation Army as addresses must provide a letter from either organization verifying proof of residency upon registration.

**Student and employee IDs may qualify as photo IDs as well. However, because addresses are not usually on these IDs, patrons must present proof of address too when applying for their library card.

If you believe you have lost your card, please don't hesitate to present official photo identification at any JMRL branch location to get a new card, free of charge.
