Frequently Asked Questions about Library Materials Ordering and Processing

The following questions are frequently asked by people visiting, calling or emailing the library to check on the status of materials.

How long should I expect to wait for new materials to be available to check out?

There is no set answer to this question, but generally speaking it can be up to a week or more from when the library receives the item. Many factors are involved, and different materials arrive at different speeds which require different processing and cataloging. Items that patrons have requested get a priority in cataloging and processing. If you have questions about a specific item, please fill out the form below.

How long should an item have the status "In Transit?"

In general, items should not be "In Transit" for more than 4 business days. If you have questions about a specific item, please fill out the form below.

How can I get an item if JMRL does not own it?

JMRL provides an Interlibrary Loan service to borrow books from libraries outside of the library system. This service is available at all library branches. Check the Interlibrary Loan page to request a book or learn more. If the book you want is new, you may suggest that we order it by filling out the Suggest a Purchase form. You may also request to place a hold on the item if JMRL adds it to the collection. You will be notified if the book is ordered and when it is available for checkout.

How can I inform JMRL if I think something has gone wrong with an item?

Use this form to report any titles that have no items, or if all the copies have an unusual status (like "Lost and Paid", "Billed", or "Missing"), or if you have been waiting an unusually long time for an item. We'll look into it!
