Beach served as Executive Officer of the USS Tirante during World War II, experience which contributed to his best-known novel, Run Silent, Run Deep from which a film starring Clark Gable was made. His father, Edward L. Beach, Sr. was also an author who wrote non-fiction and young adult novels..
